This is a great way to get involved in college and looks great on your resume. Many companies look specifically for candidates who have had leadership experience and this is a great way to get that experience while having something to talk about during interviews.

What do you need to do?
Prepare a 30 sec campaign speech and attend the elections meeting. Please send the Chair or Vice Chair a PowerPoint slide about yourself.
Position Descriptions

CHAIR*
Responsible for the organization and successful operation of the
student section. Serves as the intermediary between the school and the
organization and also works to secure funds. Also in charge of general
meetings.
VICE CHAIR*
Responsible for the other officers. In charge of business meetings
and the maintenance duties including office hours, contact info,
calendar planning, etc. Steps in for Chair when absent.
SECRETARY*
Responsible for maintaining records of the section, ordering office
supplies and other material, takes meeting minutes, and organizes the
ASME bulletin board.
TREASURER*
Responsible for maintaining the financial accounts, approving the
budget, authorizing purchases, writing checks for events, and updating
reports.
INDUSTRIAL RELATIONS CO-CHAIR*
Works together with other co-chair to accomplish and gain support
from industry for ASME activities through plant trips, speakers, seminars,
financial sponsorship and scholarships, and any other corporate supported
activities. Works with other officers for corporate support in ASME activities.
BANQUET CHAIR*
Organizes and runs the Fall Initiation Banquet and the Spring Awards
Banquet. Secures appropriate facilities, invites appropriate persons, and
facilitates the presentation of awards. Also responsible for Outstanding
Member Awards.
CONFERENCE CHAIR (*one year position if hosting conference)
Organizes and make arrangements for the student section to attend
national and regional conferences. Mainly in charge of planning trips
to SLTS (Student Leadership Training Seminar), and to Congress
(ASME national Conference).
CONTEST CHAIR*
Informs and encourages participation in contests and competitions
sponsored by ASME. Facilitates impromptu design contests. Also prepares
and organizes the necessary information for the Ingersoll-Rand Report.
POLYGON REPRESENTATIVE
Responsible for representing ASME at Polygon meetings and presenting
ASME funding proposals, activities, and needs to Polygon. Informs the
section of all pertinent news from Polygon regarding the College of
Engineering and Polygon. Also prepares for Career Connections and
Homecoming in the Fall.
ACADEMIC CHAIR
Responsible for assisting members in academic work. Includes developing
and maintaining the exam file, mentoring program between upper and underclassmen,
announcing scholarships and loans, having an ME Open House, Pizza with Profs,
and other academic programs.
FUNDRAISING CHAIR
Responsible for raising money for the student section through various
activities that may include pizza sales, T-shirt sales, security events,
cookouts, notebook sales, etc. Also in charge of trying to set up
Auction-An-Engineer charity event with Outreach Chair.
HISTORIAN CHAIR
Prepares records for the continuation of tradition and remembrance of
the past heritage of the student section. Makes a photo album and scrapbook
to commemorate each academic year in the section. They will make sure
pictures, programs, and the like are collected at each activity.
OUTREACH CHAIR
Organizes and plans all outreach events with the community and the
college. Some of these events include Christmas for Kids, Relay for Life,
High School Day on Campus, Girl and Boy Scout Day on Campus, Habitat for
Humanity, Special Olympics, Haunted House, K-12 Outreach, Adopt-a-Block,
Blood Drives, ESTEAM, community cleanups, and others.
PROGRAMMING CHAIR
Oversees logistics of all general meetings including food, drink, and
pizza. Organizes and provides all non-industrial speakers and seminars,
and lends a hand in the programming needs of the other officers.
PUBLICITY CHAIR
Takes necessary steps to publicize all ASME activities including trips,
conferences, socials, fundraising, outreach events, meetings, etc. Gathers
articles for and puts together “The Lobby” publication of the student section
three times a semester.
REGIONAL LIAISON CHAIR
Representing this student section of ASME at regional meetings and events.
Maintains records and contact with alumni and organize events, etc. with alumni
and professional ASME members.
SOCIAL CHAIR
Responsible for social gatherings of the members. Organizes and undertakes
social activities including tailgates, cookouts, bi-annual officer retreats,
intramural sports teams, and other social activities.
WEBMASTER CHAIR
Prepare and maintains the student section web site. Responsible for updating
a calendar of events, sponsor lists, officer lists and contacts, meeting minutes,
and other updates. They should also teach those members who are interested in
learning more about web site creation.
